‘A wake-up call’: total weight of wild mammals less than 10% of humanity’s

The total weight of Earth’s wild land mammals – from elephants to bisons and from deer to tigers—is now less than 10% of the combined tonnage of men, women and children living on the planet. A study by scientists at Israel’s Weizmann Institute of Science, published this month, concludes that wild land mammals alive today […]

How rehoming wildlife from rhinos to bison can revive threatened species

Classified as “near threatened” by the IUCN, numbers of white rhino are declining across Africa, mainly because of poaching. The recent arrival of numerous babies in Akagera suggests the mission to create a new rhino haven is on track. Fewer than 340 of these whales exist today, including only 80 breeding females. The population is estimated to have dwindled […]

Dugong functionally extinct in China due to habitat degradation and hunting

The dugong is now functionally extinct in China after widespread degradation of their habitat and historical hunting, scientists have said. Fishing and ship strikes are also among the reasons dugong activity has declined, said Prof Samuel Turvey of ZSL’s Institute of Zoology, who described the findings as a “wake-up call” to prioritize conservation efforts.
